It Depends On a Lot Of Things

In one of my first posts I talked about the issue of Senator Obama being criticized for what his pastor said.  I have thought further about this issue and I believe it depends on a lot of things weather or not Seantor Obama should be criticized for what his pastor said.

Even though Senator Obama chose to be around his pastor, Senator Obama clearly said that he did not believe what his pastor said.

John F. Kennedy says “I believe in a president, whose views on religion are his own private affair, neither imposed upon him by the nation nor imposed by the nation upon him as a condition to holding that office.”

Even though Senator Obama never said what his pastor said, he still chose to interact and go to that church, and how he is having to deal with the consequences of that decision even though he doesn’t support the words of his pastor.

Mr. Obama has been attending Trinity United Church for the last twenty years until this past May, in which he sent in resignation letter. Trinity United has been pastured by Rev. Jeremiah Wright for thirty-six years, until his retirement this last year. After being under Pastor Wright’s tutelage for twenty years, Obama has chosen to be in agreement with the pastor’s teachings and beliefs. If Obama disagreed with Rev. Wright, he would have left long ago. Mr. Obama disassociated himself with Rev. Wright after twenty years of learning because he was loosing voters over Rev. Wright’s controversial sermons. Rev. Wright has made several offending comments in his sermons, in which Mr. Obama was in the audience. Why did Mr. Obama stay at Trinity United Church if he heard these offensive remarks about America?

I do not believe that we can know the answer to this question. As I have said, it depends on a lot of things. It depends on whether Senator Obama didn’t want to offend his pastor or he stayed because he agreed with what his pastor said. Either way, Senator Obama still has to take the consequences for his decision to say. Again, I don’t believe we can know why Senator Obama stayed at the church, just that he did.

I agree with both of you. Obama needed to leave this church earlier if he didn’t agree with the things that Trinity United Church said or did. I mean why would you go to a church that you didn’t agree with? That’s like being a Southern Baptist but attending a Catholic or Mormon church. It just doesn’t make sense.

I believe that Obama simply left Trinity United Church because it was going to hurt his Presidential Campaign. I think that Obama would still be there if he wasn’t trying to run for President. He might say that he doesn’t believe the stuff that Trinity United Church believes, but he had to believe at least some stuff because he went there for 20 years.
